VISUAL FIELD PRESERVATION IN ADVANCED PRIMARY OPEN-ANGLE GLAUCOMA AFTER FILTRATION SURGERY Traverse C.E., Semino E., Morescalchi F., Corazza M., Gandolfo E., Zingirian M. University Eye Clinic of Genoa (Italy) PURPOSE: To evaluate Visual Field (V.F.) changes in patients with advanced primary open-angle glaucoma undergoing filtration surgery. METHODS: Selection criteria: preoperative IOP z= 21 mmHg; postoperative IOP < 16 mmHg on no medications; itable visual acuity and pupil size: preoperative visual field with MD > 6 dB (Humphrey 30.2); minimum follow-up of 10 months. 27 patients met the above criteria; 14 had postoperative IOP < 12 and > 4 mmHg. V.F. data were analyzed using the Statpac 2 Glaucoma Probability Change program and the Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test. RESULTS: A statistically significant (Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test) decrease in mean defect was detected after surgically lowering IOP. Better results were obtained in patients with IOP between 4 and 12 mmHg. CONCLUSIONS: Our results support the hypothesis of a favorable effect of lowering IOP surgically in patients with advanced primary open-angle glaucoma.

The Effect of Intra-Articular Injection of Two Anti TNF Drugs on Histopathology and Effect of Local Infusion of these Drugs on Blood Flow of Chronically Inflamed Joints in Rabbit

Background & Aims: The anti TNF drugs are new line treatment for articular inflammatory diseases which are used systemically, but due to expensiveness and some systemic adverse effects have limited usage. The aims of this study were to investigate the effect of intra-articular (local) injection of Etanercept and Infliximab as two anti TNF drugs on histopathology and also due to the important ro...

MECHANISMS OF BLOOD FLOW INCREASE INDUCED BY ELECTRICAL STIMULATION

Previous studies have shown that electrical stimulation (ES) increases blood flow, but the exact mechanisms are not clear. The present study was designed to clarify some of the underlying mechanisms involved in this phenomenon. White adult rabbits Lt.-6 months old were used. Animals were anesthetized by sodium pentobarbital (40 mg/kg, IV) and skin blood flow in the thoracic back was recorde...

Rho Kinase Inhibitors as a Novel Treatment for Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension

In an elegant example of bench-to-bedside research, a hypothesis that cells in the outflow pathway actively regulate conventional outflow resistance was proposed in the 1990s and systematically pursued, exposing novel cellular and molecular mechanisms of intraocular pressure (IOP) regulation. The critical discovery that pharmacologic manipulation of the cytoskeleton of outflow pathway cells dec...

A Numerical Analysis for the Effect of Slip Velocity and Stenosis Shape on Non-Newtonian Flow of Blood (TECHNICAL NOTE)

The aim of this paper is to study the effect of slip velocity and shape of stenosis on non-Newtonian flow of blood through a stenosed arterial segment. Blood is modeled as Bingham-Plastic fluid in a uniform circular tube with a radially non-symmetric stenosis. The problem is investigated by a joint effort of analytical and numerical techniques. The influence of stenosis shape parameter, slip ve...

The Effect of Aerobic Training with and without Blood Flow Restriction on the Length and Balance of Women with Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract Background & aim: Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease which damages the central nervous system. Disruption of walking is one of the characteristics of multiple sclerosis. Currently, exercise training is known as an effective tool in the rehabilitation of multiple sclerosis. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect(s) of aerobic training with/without blood flow r...
